Beyond Football: Mark González’s Mission to Create Opportunities Through LegendStar

The former Chilean footballer speaks with NUZZA about dreams, opportunity, and the purpose behind a foundation dedicated to transforming lives.
At just 13 years old, Mark González made a decision that would change the course of his life forever.
He left behind his home, his family, and the comfort of everything familiar to pursue a dream that many would have considered impossible. Years later, that same young boy would go on to play on some of football’s biggest stages, representing Chile and wearing the jerseys of some of the world's most iconic clubs.
Yet when Mark talks about success today, he doesn't mention trophies, statistics, or career milestones.
He talks about roots.
He talks about opportunity.
And most importantly, he talks about people.
During the launch of LegendStar, the foundation created by the former Chilean footballer, NUZZA had the opportunity to speak with him about life after professional sports and the mission that now drives much of his work: helping young people believe in what is possible.
"I think success is also about never losing your roots," González shared. "It's about continuing to be the person you are and always thinking about how you can help others."
Those words capture the very essence of LegendStar.
A Foundation Born From Experience
More than a sports organization, LegendStar was built from lived experience.
Mark understands what it means to receive an opportunity at the right moment. He knows what it feels like when someone believes in you before you've had the chance to prove yourself. He also understands that talent alone is not always enough.
That is why LegendStar focuses on supporting young people beyond athletic development. Through programs centered on education, mentorship, leadership, and personal growth, the foundation aims to equip the next generation with the tools needed to build meaningful futures.
Its mission is simple but powerful: to create opportunities for those who may not have had them before.
"LegendStar exists to give opportunities to those who haven't had them, or to those who think they never will," González explained.
The foundation also recognizes the critical role families play in a young person's development. One of the aspects Mark emphasized most during our conversation was the importance of guiding and supporting parents, helping them make informed decisions that empower their children to pursue their goals.
The Courage to Try
When asked what advice he would give to a young person afraid to take the first step toward a dream, his answer came without hesitation.
"Always follow your dreams and never let anyone clip your wings."
At the same time, he was honest about the challenges that inevitably come with ambition.
"Nothing in life is easy. Everything comes with difficult moments, and you always have to be prepared for them."
Perhaps that is one of the most valuable lessons behind LegendStar's philosophy. Success is not simply about reaching a destination. It is about having the courage to begin, learning through adversity, and continuing forward even when the outcome remains uncertain.
For Mark, failure is not found in falling short of a goal.
Failure is never trying at all.
Building Good People
Throughout our conversation, one theme continued to surface again and again: values.
While LegendStar seeks to help young people grow academically, professionally, and personally, its ultimate goal goes far deeper than achievement.
When asked what he hopes a young person supported by the foundation will remember ten years from now, Mark did not talk about titles, fame, or financial success.
Instead, he spoke about character.
"Whether they achieve their goals or not, what we want is to create good people with strong values."
In a world that often measures success through numbers, status, and visibility, LegendStar offers a different perspective, one where personal growth carries just as much value as professional accomplishment.
And perhaps that is where its greatest impact lies.
A Legacy That Continues
Mark González's football career left its mark on the sport.
Today, however, his legacy appears to be taking on a new form.
Through LegendStar, he is transforming his own experiences into opportunities for others. Not by telling young people exactly which path to follow, but by reminding them that their dreams are valid and that, with the right support, opportunities can change the trajectory of a life.
